June Arts Festival to Showcase Historic Hyde Park

The University of Chicago, working with more than twenty Hyde Park cultural institutions, is pleased to announce the second annual Hyde Park Arts Festival, to be held Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8 throughout the Hyde Park community, one of the city’s most historically rich and culturally diverse neighborhoods. Scheduled to coincide with the 57th Street Art Fair, the oldest juried art fair in the Midwest, and the Community Art Fair, which features work by local artists, the Arts Fest will offer a smorgasbord of arts activities - from live music, theatre, ballet, and modern dance to poetry readings, arts exhibitions, and access to some of the Chicago's great museums. During festival weekend, a free trolley system will link more than 20 the participating arts institutions offering concerts, workshops, and tours. As an additional bonus, on weekends, parking is free of charge at all University of Chicago parking lots, including the parking structure on the southeast corner of 55th Street and Ellis Avenue.

Participating arts organizations include the Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House, the premier example of Wright’s signature Prairie Style, where the University of Chicago Press, one of Chicago’s largest publishers, will host Blair Kamin, architecture critic for the Chicago Tribune, to autograph paperback copies of his book Why Architecture Matters; the David and Alfred Smart Museum, one of the country's leading university art museums; the University of Chicago's Renaissance Society museum, the country’s oldest contemporary art society; the Chicago Storytellers Guild; the Oriental Institute Museum, home to one of the finest collections of ancient Near Eastern art in the world.

Visitors can also tour the Project Exploration dinosaur lab, and participate in workshops to cast fossil molds and learn scientific drawing. Calligraphy workshops and dance recitals featuring the Hyde Park School of Ballet and Muntu Dance Company at the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club.

For history buffs, there will be self-guided historic tours of Hyde Park; a discussion of Lorado Taft and the Fountain of Time at the Midway Studios, and a self-guided tour of the stained glass windows at the Hyde Park Union Church

Individuals of all ages from throughout the Chicagoland region are expected to attend the Festival and go away with renewed conviction that Hyde Park and environs are happening places to be for artistic, cultural, and social activities. Come join the fun!
